A big-time small road race in Wyobraska

August 29, 2012

If you live in or near the Nebraska Panhandle and are a runner, I would hope you would know about the Western Nebraska Community College Foundation Fall Frolic by now.

The Frolic, which benefits the WNCC Foundation, has a panoply of race options: 10K individual, 10K relay, 5K run/walk, and kids’ race.

The race is in its third year. I wrote about it in 2010 and 2011. Alas, no costume contest this year. There was not enough interest, and with the race being a month earlier this year, the big box stores are not yet stocking costumes. (Or are they … ?)

There are a bevy of small fundraiser races in the community, which makes my little runner heart very happy. The Fall Frolic stands above them all, though, for a few reasons.

#1, For the avowed couch potato: If you pay your registration by the early bird deadline (Sept. 14 this year), not only do you get a $5 discount, but you could WIN A BIG-SCREEN TV! (Pardon the all-caps shouting, but I think that’s pretty exciting!)

#2, For the stats fanatic: No need to fuss with your watch – the race has professional chip timing! Additionally, applications are being made to USATF-certify the course.

#3, For the front-of-the-pack runner: $$$ome $$$ignificant ca$$$h. The men’s and women’s overall 10K winners will each get $500, and the men’s and women’s overall 5K winners will each get $300. Excellent ROI for just a $25/$20 registration investment (at early bird rates).

#4, For the meme-aware: The Fall Frolic has Mo Farah!

For those of you who didn’t get that last one, check this out.

Hope to see you all out on the Fall Frolic course, as runners, walkers or volunteers! (I’ll be volunteering.)

Props to this site for the cutout and to Mark Rein, who took the John Seiler photo I grabbed from the WNCC Foundation Facebook page.

The WNCC Foundation is so fortunate to have you and Jeff as members of the volunteer race crew! Thank you so much! 🙂
