Geese abound

December 19, 2011

Though Bugman hasn’t bagged any in his last two hunting forays (the birds always seem to come in to land right as he’s driving away), the North Platte River valley is lousy with geese right now.

A few evenings ago, we stopped at Main Street Market just after sunset to get some groceries but wound up standing in the parking lot for several minutes to watch an impressive (and impressively noisy) phalanx of geese fly downriver. There were hundreds of birds all flapping and squonking overhead.

Goose song has been accompanying each sunrise and sunset for weeks now, sounding alternately joyous or mournful, depending on the context of my day.

This morning, I crossed the North Platte River twice, going and coming via both the Avenue I/Five Rocks Road and the 10th Street/Broadway bridges. I glanced up and down the river, and wherever there was exposed riverbank, there were geese.

Here’s a shot I cropped from a not-even-looking-point-and-shoot-out-the-window-as-I’m-driving photo:

HONK! HONKER! SQUONK SQUONK SQUONK!
