Fourth of July weekend at the farmers market

July 4, 2011

This Fourth of July weekend, rather than focusing on the rocket’s red glare and shtuff blowing up (enough of that has been going on in my neighborhood for the past week, thanks to liberal fireworks laws), I’m choosing to highlight our nation’s agrarian roots and “founding gardeners.” Isn’t food security and independence just as important as national security and independence?

So, some festive pictures from the first summer farmers market of the season for you.

A patriotic Grace vanilla cupcake.

A Victory Hill Farm chevre star with cranberries and blueberries.

And, a new-to-me vegetable, the garlic scape, from Meadlowlark Hearth.

To cap things off, a rendition of America the Beautiful by the incomparable Ray Charles.

Happy Birthday to your amber waves of grain, America, from sea to shining sea.

And, a thoughtful read about how the image of America we have built for ourselves is never as simple as we would like.

I had the honor and privilege to see and hear Ray in person!
