Snow: what a difference a few hundred miles makes

March 17, 2011

One of the things I rather like about living in Scottsbluff is the fact that we can get 6 inches of snow, and it’ll be gone in less than a week.

Yeah, I miss being able to cross-country ski, but at least we’re not dragging the slush and grit inside our houses all winter.

Here is a picture taken in the Minnesota Twin Cities area this week. The earth is just now starting its spring yawn, emerging from snow that has been there since November 13!

Yes, the black stuff in the middleground is soil, for those of you not familar with the beautiful udoll molisols upon which I was raised.

Yep. There are some definite benefits to living on the high plains. You get to say “neener neener” to the Minnesotans (and probably North/South Dakotans) in late winter / early spring.

Have you been able to get to Colorado to get some more stable snow?

Nope. Apart from a visit last February, I’ve not explored any of Colorado. I wonder if they have any relatively inexpensive, flattish (easy) cross country skiiing like they’ve got in Minnesota.
