A few pre-Black-Friday plugs

November 22, 2010

With the holidays coming up, I wanted to use my blog platform to make a couple of plugs. Feel free to plug away in the comments section if you have more suggestions for locally-sourced gift ideas.

Pet portraits

For the seventh year, Gering artist Jenifer Berge is creating pet portraits from photographs to raise money for the Panhandle Humane Society. The event raised about $1000 last year to help take care of homeless animals, and the humane society executive director says that funds are needed more than ever because donations are down.

While the photo shows just dogs, Jenifer will also do cats, horses, birds, turtles - any pet! She just needs a *clear* photograph to work from.

The portraits are a great deal, not only because it helps out an animal shelter, but because the price of the portraits is reduced as well. Jenifer is charging $85 (plus shipping) for an 8X10-inch pastel, and half the proceeds go to the humane society. After December 31, the special fundraiser deal is over, and the portraits would cost $150 apiece. For larger portraits or oil/acrylic medium, the price goes up. Paintings are completed on a first-come, first-served basis, but if things get too backed up before Christmas, a gift certificate may be an option for a gift.

For more information, see the fundraiser’s Facebook page or call Jenifer 308-436-5949 or the Panhandle Humane Society 308-635-0922.

More art

I haven’t checked it out yet, but the West Nebraska Arts Center gallery is currently showing holiday and gift items. Get a beautiful gift and support local artists!

UPDATE: It’s the North Platte Valley Art Guild members that are selling their art at the holiday show.

Book on local wildflowers

As you might be able to tell from previous posts (1, 2 and 3), I’ve been impressed by the wildflowers in this region. Local photographer Connie McKinney has put together a book (with help from her daughter and funding from conservation organizations) profiling wildflowers that can be found in the Biologically Unique Landscape of the Wildcat Hills, which includes Scotts Bluff National Monument. (She has been thinking of putting out a second edition, since she’s gotten so many more wildflower photos since the first book was printed, but she needs to sell out the initial printing first.) The book was locally printed, and is available at your friendly neighborhood bookstore (Copperfield). Proceeds from the sale of this field guide benefit the Wildcat Hills Wildlands Education Fund.

Gift certificates

Gift certificates are always a good option for those hard-to-buy-for people, especially gift certificates for items that can be used up, like food or entertainment or B&B getaways. I don’t know exactly which local establishments offer certificates (anyone care to comment?).

UPDATE: Hanlon House has goodies available. See the comments.

Charitable donations

If you’ve had it up to your eyeteeth with commercialism and the person you want to honor doesn’t need any more “stuff,” how about a donation to a local charity in the person’s name? I don’t know if there are charities around here that would send a commemorative card (anyone care to comment?).

Farmers market goodies

Aaaand, last but not least is the excellent selection o’ gifts at the Scottsbluff winter farmer’s market. Jams, soaps, lotions, honey, bison jerky, crafts, jewelry (what else am I forgetting?) — all locally made. For info, check out the market’s Facebook page. Next market day is November 27 from 1-4 p.m. at the Hampton Inn (east entrance).

That’s all I can think of at the moment. Happy shopping.

How about purchasing local art at the North Platte Valley Artist Guild’s current show and sale at the West Nebraska Arts Center in Scottsbluff?
